My Old Leather Jacket

Lyrics

my old leather jacket
my old leather jacket has a few holes
i still love to wear it, it has more soul
than any other jacket i ever did own
keeps me cool when it’s hot, warm when it’s cold
now it’s turning all gray and the thread’s showing through
i was wearing that jacket the first time i met you

there was a time it was shiny and new
when i saw it on bleecker street out of the blue
i looked in the window and there on the rack
hanging right on the end i could swear it looked back
i had it on and before you could blink
a man by the window said “what do you think?”

i asked him how much, he stared out the door
and gave me a price i could almost afford
I looked at his wife, she was there with a child
and big all around from her feet to her smile
she looked me all over and before i knew
she said “that jacket really belongs on you”

i wore that old jacket when i reached the top
of some mountain somewhere and knew i had to stop
i wore that old jacket out painting the town
in new york city walking all night around
i was wearing that jacket one night at some jam
when i watched my fingers be more than I am
i was wearing that jacket when i went off the track
and you know that old jacket still had my back

i let you wear it one time i was gone
you got kidded by all of your girlfriends in town
and when i returned and took it back from you
you came home with me and we got married too
and though it’s all beat up and can’t be made new
my old leather jacket still comes home to you

my old leather jacket still goes out on trial
wrapped in a song and a scarf and a smile
you can see him out there by the campfire at night
when the music is good and the feeling is right
of life’s many blessings i know at least two
i was wearing that jacket the first time i kissed you
